UNWTO holds first conference on Smart Destinations

THE SPANISH REGION OF MURCIA WILL HOST THE FIRST ‘SMART DESTINATIONS‘ CONFERENCE

(Posted 13th February 2017)

To advance and shape a tourism model for the 21st century based on innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility – these are the aims of the World Conference on Smart Destinations to be held in Murcia from 15th to 17th of February, organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda of Spain, and the Region of Murcia.

A few weeks following the launch of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, the city of Murcia has picked up the baton to offer a platform for the discussion of key issues in the global agenda of the sector, such as innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility.

The 1st UNWTO World Conference on Smart Destinations will bring together government representatives, private sector entities, researchers and academics, as well as technology centres. Among the topics to be addressed is that of digital applications that make it possible to offer increasingly customized services and to differentiate tourist destinations that provide added value while preserving the natural, social and cultural environment.

These themes, which are priorities of the work of the World Tourism Organization, define 21st century tourism: committed to ecosystems, local cultures and to economic and social development‘ explained UNWTO Secretary-General Dr. Taleb Rifai. ‘It will be impossible to capitalize on the potential of tourism in aspects such as job creation and socioeconomic development if we do not commit to and move towards sustainable practices that are respectful of the environment and local communities‘ he underlined.

The Conference includes an academic block in which research related to 21st century tourism will be presented. A session will also feature entrepreneurs who have developed highly innovative products or services in the area of smart destinations.

The event will conclude with the reading of a manifesto summarizing the contributions of the participants, which will form the basis of the first UNWTO report on smart destinations.

The International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, declared by the United Nations General Assembly and led by UNWTO, constitutes a common tool for global action towards a more responsible, inclusive and prosperous sector. To this end, the organizations in charge of the Conference encourage governments, private sector entities, consumers and civil society organizations to join the campaign and share their experiences.

Lillian Gaitho’s opens the week with thoughts how social media impact on travel

Four Ways Social Media Continues to Affect the Way we Experience Travel

Like it or loathe it, social media has now become part of our lives. It’s a vital communication tool for both personal and community level relations. Developing trends have been adapted by many a corporate in a bid to reach their online targets as well as help penetrate new markets. Being an online-based travel portal, Jumia Travel looks at concepts and key areas that have majorly affected the way we experience travel; from booking to sharing and endorsing.

Hotel and destination search

Today most travelers are more likely to post their “vacation” plans on different social media channels than they did five or ten years ago. With the advent of the smartphone euphoria you are likely to be part of a friend’s “planning phase” through tags, shares and status posts either seeking advice, or simply expressing their anticipation. Destination marketers and hotels can employ metrics that enable them to identify specific individuals who have displayed interest in exploring their properties and attractions. Therefore, if well timed, this is the best phase to nab potential customers and lead them to your service.

Word of mouth recommendations

Online communities, usually joined together by a common interest or background such as alumnus groups, religious factions, neighborhood watch and the like are great starting points for almost unbiased recommendations. The simple idea that a buyer is more likely to trust word of mouth from a friend of a friend than they would an online ad will affect a traveler’s planning and final action.

Blogging and microblogging

As part of sharing experiences, some people tend to post short excerpts and stories from their travel in real time. Think of snapchat that easily captures mood, environment and reactions in a continuous prose without the need to sit down to produce a long winding documentary! If not on snapchat, Facebook fans also do not seem to mind going live, or even typing down briefs that capture their experiences as their journey or stay unfold.

Reviews and likes

In this article, Invesp, a marketing and analytics firm observes that 90% of consumers read online reviews before placing an order or making a purchase. Even more intriguing is that a staggering 88% trust online reviews as much as they do personal recommendations per the survey. Sharing our reviews on social media is seen as a channel for free expression and could go anyway; for a thumbs up on service and experience, a lukewarm expression or a downright disappointment. These, will no doubt influence the decisions of any traveler who comes across them.

Is it do or die for Rift Valley Railways?

KENYA RAILWAYS SERVES NOTICE ON RVR OVER UNPAID CONCESSION FEES

(Posted 13th February 2017)

The joint concessionaire for both the Kenya and Uganda narrow gauge railway system, Rift Valley Railways, has come under renewed pressure over allegedly unpaid concession fees.
It was learned from sources in Nairobi that as a result Kenya Railways served the company with a formal notice of intent to cancel the agreement should payment not be forthcoming.
Sources in Kampala were tightlipped however if RVR owed Uganda Railways payments, though there is speculation that the state of flux at the company’s ownership panel has not been helpful.
Qualaa, an Egyptian company and the main investor in RVR, was said to be rattled and deeply unhappy over emerging reports of alleged financial improprieties by former and present staff, in part to do with the procurement of engines. Qalaa has subsequently sought to sell their full or part stake in Rift Valley Railways, to reduce their exposure.
Regular railway sources now speak of a monumentally wasted opportunity by the company to ramp up operations in preparations of the mid year launch of the new standard gauge railway from the port of Mombasa to Nairobi while still holding the rail monopoly on the route from Nairobi to the Ugandan border and the capital Kampala – besides the branch line to the northern Ugandan town of Gulu.
The outstanding concession fees for 2016, due to be paid quarterly. have reportedly risen to some 600 million Kenya Shillings, and a suspected similar amount for Uganda. If not cleared on the double will Kenya Railways according to information at hand cancel the concession, which has previously been in trouble too before Qalaa’s legal predecessor Citadel Holdings, stepped in with a massive cash injection.
For now is a 30 day notice period running and the outcome is wide open as Qalaa is pondering if to inject more money to rescue the company, find a new investor or otherwise let the company go into free fall should the concession be cancelled.
