Ethiopian Airlines inaugurates Africa’s most modern inflight catering centre

BETTER KITCHENS – BETTER MEALS AS ETHIOPIAN LAUNCHES NEW CATERING CENTRE

Ethiopian Airlines new G+1 In-flight catering unit, the most modern in Africa, covers a total area of 11,500 square metres, encompassing a state if the art operations and food processing area, fully-equipped with high-tech cooking and bakery equipment, large capacity dishwashing and heavy-duty ice-cube machines, hot kitchen, storage units, cold rooms, stores, flow wrapping, loading bays, high lift trucks and vans, varieties of cooling facilities, a dedicated Halal kitchen as well as a number of modern rooms.

Ethiopian’s Group CEO Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam, remarked earlier today when opening the new facility: ‘We are highly delighted with yet another remarkable and historical milestone at Ethiopian, by inaugurating state-of-the-art In-flight Catering Facility, which is the largest in the continent of Africa. This modern facility will significantly enhance our capacity of offering wide variety menu of meal services to our esteemed customers – from the traditional staple injera to a selection of world cuisines; Chinese, Indian, Ottoman, Italian, Halal and many more. Moreover, Ethiopian Catering being one of our seven Strategic Business Units, it has well positioned itself to successfully accomplish its vision of becoming the most competitive and leading in-flight catering service provider in Africa, while maintaining highest service quality and safety standards. I strongly believe that our unique Ethiopian hospitality coupled with the variety of culinary experiences, will induce an excellent ingredient and a new dimension to the already multiple award winning inflight services that we are very well known for in the industry‘.

Ethiopian catering service is strictly guided by Hazard Analysis and Critical Control points (HACCP), policies and procedures which promote a high level of quality management for the safe production and handling process of all catering services. The new facility will increase Ethiopian meal uplift capacity to more than 100,000 meals per day, which makes a huge impact as compared to the 36,000 daily volume it used to produce previously.

Ethiopian Catering currently provides in-flight catering services for more than 240 Ethiopian daily departing flights, VIP and Charter flights, which often shuttle to and from Addis Ababa hub, as well as to Ethiopian customer airlines flying to Addis Ababa.
As a way forward is Ethiopian Catering looking to extend its operation, opening other new facilities in Africa, following its strategic partnership with other airlines across the continent, making it a serious contender for inflight catering services against the traditional suppliers of such services.
